First trip to Orlando: where do you start?

Quick answer

Pick your dates first, then decide how many park days and which parks, and only then book the house, flights or drive, and car. Buy park tickets before Lightning Lane, which guests outside Disney hotels can buy 3 days ahead. Disney dining reservations open 60 days before the meal.

A first Orlando trip comes with a long list of decisions: which parks, which tickets, where to stay, whether to rent a car, whether to pay for shorter lines, where to eat. There is an order that makes it easier. Settle one thing at a time, in the right sequence, and each choice narrows the next one. This guide follows that order in seven steps, and each step points to the article that covers it in depth.

Should you drive or fly to Orlando?

If the drive is a day or less and you are a family or group, driving usually makes the rest of the plan simpler. You skip the rental counter, you bring as much luggage, food and gear as the car holds, and you already have wheels for the parks and the grocery run. If the drive would eat two days of vacation each way, flying buys those days back.

A few details matter if you drive:

  • Tolls. Check whether the transponder you already have works in Florida. According to Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, Florida’s own SunPass Mini and SunPass PRO work across Florida, Georgia, Kansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas, and the SunPass PRO also works on E-ZPass roads in a long list of states. The local rules are in how tolls work in Orlando.
  • Parking. Your car still pays to park at the theme parks. At Disney, standard parking was $35 per day in October 2026, according to the official site.

If you fly in from the UK or another Visa Waiver Program country, you need an approved ESTA before you travel. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection site says you can apply any time before the trip and recommends applying early. Travelers from countries outside the program usually need a visitor visa.

Step 1: when is the best time for a first trip?

The best time balances the weather you can handle with the crowds you are willing to accept. School breaks, spring break and the summer weeks are the easiest dates for many families, and also some of the busiest in the parks.

Three reads help you choose:

Step 2: how many park days, and which parks?

Decide how many park days your group can handle first, then pick the parks. A full week of parks with no break wears out adults and kids. Rest days between parks make the whole trip go further.

The math, by trip length and travel style, is in how many park days you need in Orlando. Once you have a number, see where to buy Disney World and Universal tickets and how much they cost. Buy tickets before you think about paid line skipping, because Disney only sells Lightning Lane for days you have valid park admission.

Step 3: where to stay, vacation home or hotel?

Choose the area before you choose between a house and a hotel. Staying near Disney, near Universal or in between changes your drive time every single day. The areas are compared in where to stay in Orlando.

Then weigh both formats in vacation home vs hotel in Orlando. Disney Resort hotels do come with real planning perks: guests can buy Lightning Lane 7 days before the first day of their stay, for up to 14 days, and book dining for the whole stay (up to 10 nights) starting 60 days before arrival. A vacation home, on the other hand, gives the whole group separate bedrooms, a kitchen and a pool.

For a price reference, the median nightly rate of Orlando Best Place homes over the next 12 months, before cleaning and taxes, is $162. With the house full, the median per person per night is $25. What goes into the final price is in Orlando vacation rental cost.

Step 4: how do you book without getting scammed?

Book only with a company you can verify, and pay with a method that lets you dispute the charge. A price far below the market, a request for a wire or peer to peer payment and pressure to close fast are the most common warning signs. How to check each one is in Orlando vacation rental scams.

The second thing to watch is the total. Cleaning fees, taxes and platform fees can show up only at the last step of checkout. See what they are in Orlando vacation rental fees and taxes. When you book direct with Orlando Best Place, a Florida registered company since 2023, the final price with cleaning and taxes is shown before payment, there is no platform fee and payments are processed by Stripe.

Step 5: do you need a car, and how do you get from the airport?

If you stay in a vacation home, a car is usually the most practical option, because the vacation home resorts are spread across Kissimmee, Davenport and Orlando. The pros and cons are in do you need a car in Orlando.

The city’s main airport is Orlando International Airport (MCO). If you fly, compare nearby dates, since a day or two can change the fare. The ways to get from the terminal to the house are in how to get from Orlando airport to your vacation home.

Step 6: what does a park day look like from a vacation home?

You leave early by car, pay for parking at the park and come back to the house whenever you want. Disney and Universal parking rates are in how much is parking at Disney World and Universal.

Departure time makes or breaks the morning. Work it out with what time you should arrive at the Orlando parks.

At Disney, guests who are not staying at a Disney Resort hotel can buy Lightning Lane, the shorter paid line, 3 days before their park visit, starting at 7:00 AM Eastern Time. If your ticket has a set start date, the window opens 3 days before the first day of the ticket and covers every day on it. Whether it is worth the money depends on the park and the date: see is Lightning Lane worth it.

Step 7: groceries and what to expect at the house?

Do the first grocery run on arrival day or the next morning. Breakfast at the house and snacks in the backpack keep the food bill down on park days. The options near the resorts are in where to buy groceries near Orlando vacation rentals.

Before you write the list, check the listing for what is already provided: linens, towels, kitchen basics, a washer, a crib. What usually comes with the house and what to bring is in what is included in an Orlando vacation rental.

How far ahead should you book each part of the trip?

Only a few items have an official booking window. The rest have no set date, and the rule is simple: around holidays and school breaks, booking earlier gives you more choice.

In practice: follow this order: dates, park days, area, house, flights or route, tickets, car. Then set two phone reminders: one 60 days before the Disney meal your family wants most, and one 3 days before your first Disney day at 7:00 AM Eastern. If you drive in from another time zone, set the alarm on Eastern Time.

If you already know the area, start with homes near Disney or search your dates.
