How do tolls work in Orlando?

Quick answer

Orlando toll roads are fully electronic, with no cash or card booths. The regular I-4 lanes are free, but SR 417 and SR 528 out of the airport charge tolls. In a rental car, use Visitor Toll Pass if you pick up and return at Orlando International, or the rental company's program, which adds a daily fee.

The fastest roads out of Orlando International Airport are toll roads, and none take cash. If you drive down from Georgia or the Carolinas, your transponder probably works. If you fly in and rent, the choice at the rental counter matters more than the tolls.

Do you need a toll pass in Orlando?

Not strictly, but driving without one costs more. The regular lanes of I-4, which runs through Orlando and the theme park area, are free. SR 417 and SR 528 out of the airport, the quickest routes to Kissimmee and the coast, are tolled. Without a transponder, you are billed by plate at a higher rate.

Two agencies run the toll roads: the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), a regional agency that owns roads like SR 417, SR 528 and SR 429, and Florida’s Turnpike, run by the state. One transponder pays on both.

I-4 Express is a set of barrier-separated managed lanes in the middle of I-4, covering 21 miles from just west of Kirkman Road in Orange County to just east of SR 436 in Seminole County. Prices show on overhead signs before each entrance, from 50 cents per segment, and rise with traffic. A transponder is required. Without one, a bill arrives by mail with a $2.50 administrative fee, and in a rental it goes to the rental company.

Can you pay Orlando tolls with cash or a card?

No. CFX closed all of its cash and reload lanes on September 30, 2025. In the Orlando area, Florida’s Turnpike, the Beachline West, the Wekiva Parkway and the Poinciana Parkway are electronic only as well. There is no booth to stop at, so a credit card won’t help at the plaza either. Tolls are collected at highway speed in one of two ways:

  • Transponder. A device or windshield sticker linked to a prepaid account. CFX accepts E-PASS, SunPass, E-ZPass, LeeWay, Peach Pass, NC Quick Pass, I-PASS and RiverLink, so most drivers from the Northeast, Georgia and the Carolinas are covered. Transponders always get the lowest rate.
  • License plate. Cameras capture the plate and a bill is mailed to the registered owner. On CFX roads this is Pay By Plate, at double the E-PASS rate. On the Turnpike it is TOLL-BY-PLATE, which adds a $2.50 administrative charge to the invoice.

If you drive your own car without a transponder, the plate bill comes to your home. In a rental, the registered owner is the rental company, which is why Florida’s Turnpike says TOLL-BY-PLATE is not available to renters: the company gets the invoice and passes it on with its own fees.

How much are tolls from Orlando airport to Kissimmee?

A few dollars each way. From Orlando International Airport (MCO) south on SR 417 to the S. John Young Parkway exit in Kissimmee, a passenger car pays $2.74 with a transponder or $5.48 by plate. The table adds up the plazas on each route using the official CFX rates.

Route, passenger car (2 axles)TransponderPay By Plate
Airport via SR 417 south to the S. John Young Pkwy exit, Kissimmee$2.74$5.48
Airport via SR 417 south to the International Dr. / World Center Dr. exit$3.44$6.88
Airport via SR 528 east to SR 520 or I-95, toward Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach$1.72$3.44

On SR 417, from the Boggy Creek Road interchange where the airport’s south exit joins, you pay the Boggy Creek Main Plaza ($1.72 with a transponder), then either the John Young Parkway exit ramp ($1.02) or the John Young Main Plaza ($1.72). Going on to US 192 or I-4 adds one more plaza at Celebration. On SR 528 there are two plazas before SR 520: Beachline ($1.08) and Dallas ($0.64).

CFX adjusts its rates every year, by 1.5 percent or by the Consumer Price Index. For your exact trip, use the CFX calculator.

What is the best way to pay tolls in an Orlando rental car?

If you pick up and return at Orlando International, Visitor Toll Pass is usually cheapest: only the tolls, at the transponder rate, with no daily fee. Renting elsewhere, you choose between the rental company’s program and your own transponder.

Visitor Toll Pass

Visitor Toll Pass is a temporary hangtag from CFX and E-PASS for renters who pick up and drop off at MCO. It is free to reserve, has no service fee and charges the lowest electronic rate on Florida toll roads. It works with Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty.

  1. Download the Visitor Toll Pass app and reserve before you fly. A $10 deposit is charged and later applied to your tolls.
  2. At the airport, pick up the pass from the vending machines near the rental counters: Level 1 in Terminals A and B, Level 4 in Terminal C.
  3. At the counter, decline the rental company’s toll program. If you don’t, you could be billed twice.
  4. Before leaving the airport, add the car’s plate number in the app and hang the pass from the mirror.
  5. On the way home, drop the pass in a return box at the airport. Forget it and you pay $10.

The pass is good for up to 90 days. Your card is first charged three business days after the trip ends, and a final charge can come up to 21 days later.

Rental company toll programs

These are the easiest option and the most expensive. You are enrolled at the first toll and pay a service fee plus the tolls, which some companies charge at the highest rate.

CompanyProgramPublished feeHow tolls are charged
Alamo, Enterprise and NationalTollPass$4.95 per day you use a toll road, up to $34.65 per rentalAt the higher of the video, cash or highest undiscounted rate
Avise-Toll$6.95 per day plus the cost of tolls. An e-Toll Unlimited option includes tollsCost of the tolls you use

A week of daily toll use on TollPass adds $34.65 in fees, the cap, plus tolls at the higher rate: the airport to John Young Parkway leg runs $5.48 instead of $2.74.

Bringing your own transponder

If your E-ZPass, Peach Pass, NC Quick Pass or SunPass already rides in your car, it works on CFX roads and the Turnpike. For a rental, a portable unit is the way to go. The E-PASS Uni costs $14.95 plus tax, works in 19 states and needs a $10 opening deposit. Update the vehicle details in your account each time you move it to a different car. With a portable SunPass, add the rental’s plate to your account with the start and end dates of the rental. Either way, take the transponder with you when you return the car.

Can you avoid tolls in Orlando?

You can, but it usually takes longer. Regular I-4 and roads like US 192 are free, and map apps can avoid tolls. But the airport’s quick exits feed straight onto SR 417 and SR 528, and after a long flight a few dollars per leg is usually worth the time.

If you skip the rental car, tolls are part of the fare. On Uber, toll charges are added to your fare automatically at the end of the trip. See when ride-hailing makes sense in is Uber worth it in Orlando.

How do you avoid surprise toll charges on a rental car?

Decide before you reach the counter. Most surprise charges come from daily rental fees, tolls billed twice and a pass that never got returned.

  • One system per car. With Visitor Toll Pass or your own transponder, decline the rental company’s program.
  • One pass per car. A group with two cars needs two Visitor Toll Passes, each linked to its own plate.
  • Expect charges after you get home. Visitor Toll Pass can bill up to 21 days after the trip. Alamo, Enterprise and National generate toll invoices a week after the rental closes.

In practice: if you fly into MCO and return the car there, reserve Visitor Toll Pass on your phone before the flight, decline the rental company’s toll program at the counter and register the plate before you hit the road. The same pass covers a day trip on SR 528 to Kennedy Space Center or Cocoa Beach. If you drive your own car, just check that your transponder account has a balance.
