Do you need a car in Orlando if you stay in a vacation home?
For a vacation home stay, almost always yes. The homes sit in resort communities in Kissimmee, Davenport and Orlando, about 15 to 40 minutes by car from the parks and the airport without traffic. Groceries and parks are a drive away, not a walk, and the I-RIDE Trolley only serves International Drive. Without a car, every outing is a rideshare.

Orlando vacation homes sit in gated resort communities across Kissimmee, Davenport and the south side of Orlando. Almost every trip out of them is by car, whether you fly in and rent one or drive your own down I-95 or I-75.
Can you do Orlando without a car?
You can, but for most families in a vacation home it costs more and takes longer. Every trip to a park, the store or a restaurant becomes a rideshare, and transit was not built around the resorts.
Uber and Lyft. At Orlando International Airport (MCO), pickup is at the arrivals curb: Level 2 at Terminals A and B, Level 6 at Terminal C. Fares move with demand, so price out your trips in the app from the home’s address. A park day is two rides, and a big group may need an XL. Universal has a rideshare drop-off area with no parking fee (Epic Universe’s is at 1201 Epic Boulevard).
Young kids. Florida requires a child restraint for kids 5 and under in a car you drive. The rule does not cover for-hire vehicles, so your child rides without one unless you bring a seat.
I-RIDE Trolley. The Red Line runs along International Drive, from Orlando International Premium Outlets to SeaWorld and Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets, about every 20 minutes from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., for $2 in exact change. Kissimmee and Davenport are off the route.
LYNX. The public bus for Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties costs $2 a ride or $4.50 a day. With transfers it is far slower than driving.
How long is the drive to the parks and the airport?
Driving routes calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, from the center of ChampionsGate (near the Davenport line) and from Storey Lake in Kissimmee (near Osceola Parkway). Times assume no traffic.
| Destination | From ChampionsGate | From Storey Lake (Kissimmee) |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Kingdom (parking) | 12 mi (20 km), 19 min | 10 mi (16 km), 17 min |
| EPCOT | 12 mi (20 km), 19 min | 6 mi (10 km), 13 min |
| Hollywood Studios | 10 mi (16 km), 17 min | 8 mi (12 km), 15 min |
| Animal Kingdom | 11 mi (18 km), 25 min | 9 mi (15 km), 23 min |

Traffic changes everything, especially on I-4 at rush hour and at park opening. At Magic Kingdom, add the parking tram to the Transportation and Ticket Center, which is not the park entrance. How your choice of area changes this is in where to stay in Orlando.
How much is parking at Disney World and Universal?
Standard parking is $35 a day at both Disney and Universal, and from a vacation home you pay it on every park day.
| Park | Standard | Preferred | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disney (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom) | $35 a day | $50, $55 or $60, depending on the date | One fee covers all 4 parks that day. Oversize vehicles, $40 |
| Disney water parks and Disney Springs | free | Free standard parking | |
| Universal (both original parks, Epic Universe, Volcano Bay, CityWalk) | $35 a day, tax included | Prime, $50 to $60 | Can be prepaid online. RVs and buses, $45 |
Sources: official Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando websites, checked in October 2026. Both say prices can change.
Free Disney parking is for Disney Resort hotel guests and select Annual Passholders, not vacation homes. At Universal, standard parking is free after 6 p.m., except on Halloween Horror Nights nights and New Year’s Eve (December 31), and never at Epic Universe.
Five park days with one car add up to $175 in parking alone. Put that next to how much an Orlando vacation rental costs, or run the full math in vacation home vs hotel in Orlando.
Can you drive in Florida with an out-of-state or foreign license?
Yes, in almost every case. Florida law exempts a nonresident 16 or older from getting a Florida license if they carry a valid license from their home state or country. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) tells international visitors to keep a valid license, in their name, from their country of residence with them.
Driving down from another state. Your license works, with two details:
- Teens. FLHSMV honors another state’s learner’s permit under Florida’s rules: daylight only for the first three months after issue, then until 10 p.m., with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat.
- Licenses Florida rejects. Connecticut’s “Drive Only” and Delaware’s “Driving Privilege Only” licenses are invalid in Florida. Licenses marked “Federal Limits Apply” or “Not for Federal Purposes” from 18 other states and D.C. are invalid only if the holder is not lawfully present in the U.S. FLHSMV publishes the list.
From Canada. The Government of Canada says a valid Canadian driver’s licence lets you drive in the U.S. Many states require proof of insurance, so carry it if you bring your own car.
From the UK. The UK government says your photocard licence is valid in the U.S., but you may also need the 1949 International Driving Permit (IDP), since rules vary by state and car hire companies often ask for one. Florida law does not require it. Get it before you leave: £5.50 at PayPoint shops.
Whatever your license, ask the rental company what it requires at the counter.
Do you need a toll pass in Orlando?
Not legally, but without one you pay more, and the toll roads take no cash. According to OSRM, the fastest routes from the airport to ChampionsGate, Kissimmee and Disney use SR 417, a toll road run, like SR 528, by the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX). Without a transponder, CFX bills Pay By Plate by mail to the registered owner, at double the transponder rate.
Your own car. Bring your transponder. CFX says E-ZPass is accepted on its roads and across Florida, and Florida’s Turnpike also lists Peach Pass and NC Quick Pass. For any other system, check with your toll agency first.
A rental car. Three options:
- The rental company’s program. Simple and usually the priciest. In October 2026, Enterprise, Alamo and National charged $4.95 for each day you use a toll road, capped at $34.65 per rental, plus the tolls at the highest rate. Avis charged $6.95 a day in Florida plus tolls. Fees change, so check your contract, and see our guide to Orlando tolls.
- Visitor Toll Pass. A free CFX hangtag for cars rented and returned at Orlando International with Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt or Thrifty. You pay only tolls, at the lowest rate, for up to 90 days, from a $10 deposit. Reserve it in the app before you fly, pick it up in your terminal, add the plate and decline the rental company’s toll program, or you may pay twice. Return it to a drop box in Terminal A, B or C, or pay $10. Final charges can post up to 21 days after the trip.
- Your own SunPass. Add the rental’s plate to your portable SunPass account for the rental dates.
Postpaid Toll-By-Plate does not work in a rental: the bill goes to the rental company.
What size rental car do you need for a family or group?
Choose by people and bags together: seven seats do not always fit seven people’s luggage. Alamo publishes both per class, so its U.S. fleet is a good yardstick.
| Class | Example model | People | Bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard SUV | Chevrolet Equinox or similar | 5 | 5 |
| 7 passenger minivan | Chrysler Pacifica or similar | 7 | 5 |
| Full size SUV | Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition or similar | 7 | 3 |
| Premium SUV | Ford Expedition Max, Jeep Wagoneer L or similar | 8 | 7 |
Source: Alamo website, checked in October 2026.
For 6 or 7 people, the minivan carries more bags than the full size SUV, and sliding doors make car seats easier. For 8 or more, two cars give each family its own schedule, at the cost of two rentals, two parking fees and two toll passes. Ask how many cars the resort allows, and browse vacation homes for large groups.
Car seats. Through age 3, Florida requires a separate carrier or the car’s built-in seat. At 4 and 5, a booster also works. Rent one or bring your own. If you are coming for the holidays, read Orlando in December for the traffic and crowds.
In practice: book the car with the home, sized for people and bags, with pickup and return at Orlando International. Flying in, reserve the Visitor Toll Pass before you board and decline the rental company’s toll program. Driving down, bring your E-ZPass. On park days, leave before the I-4 rush and count the time from the lot to the gate.
To drive less, start with vacation homes near Disney or near Universal, and pick your week with the least crowded times at the Orlando parks.
Vacation homes near Disney, so you drive less
The closer you stay to the parks, the less time you spend in the car. These homes are near Disney, the final price with cleaning and taxes shows before you pay, and our team answers 24/7 in English, Portuguese and Spanish, including to guide your arrival after you pick up the rental car.
