Sick on vacation in Orlando: urgent care, doctor or ER?

Quick answer

For a fever, sore throat, small cut or sprain, go to an urgent care center: no appointment, on-site X-rays and stitches, and usually cheaper than the ER. Chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs or heavy bleeding mean 911 or the ER. Outside an emergency, check your insurance network or call your travel insurer first.

A vacation home has no hotel doctor and no front desk to call at 2 a.m. If someone wakes up with a fever or twists an ankle by the pool, you decide where to go. The right choice can save hours and money. This is general guidance, not medical advice.

Where do tourists go for medical care in Orlando?

There are four doors, and the right one depends on how serious it is. The rule of thumb: the more serious, the closer to the ER.

Inside the Walt Disney World parks there is also First Aid, staffed by Disney registered nurses in each of the six parks during park hours, for over-the-counter medicine and quick fixes.

When should you go to the ER or call 911?

Call 911 if a life may be at risk. MedlinePlus, from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, lists these as emergencies:

  • severe chest pain or pressure, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw;
  • severe shortness of breath or choking;
  • sudden weakness on one side, a drooping face, or sudden trouble speaking, seeing or walking;
  • a seizure lasting more than a minute, or fainting or confusion after a head injury;
  • heavy bleeding, severe burns, electric shock or a lightning strike;
  • an allergic reaction with trouble breathing;
  • high fever with a headache and stiff neck;
  • vomiting or diarrhea that will not stop, or a possible poisoning.

If a child swallows a cleaning product or the wrong medicine, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222. Heat at the parks can turn into an emergency too. The warning signs are in how to avoid heat exhaustion at Orlando theme parks.

Under the federal EMTALA law, hospitals with an ER that take part in Medicare must screen and stabilize anyone with an emergency, regardless of ability to pay. That does not make it free. The bill follows. Which hospitals are closest to the vacation home resorts is covered in where is the nearest hospital to your Orlando vacation home.

What is urgent care, and when is it the right call?

Urgent care is a walk-in clinic for problems that need attention today but are not life threatening. MedlinePlus points to urgent care for colds and flu, earaches, sore throats, minor sprains, back pain, small cuts and burns, and minor broken bones.

The AdventHealth Centra Care centers near the resorts offer X-rays, lab tests (flu, COVID-19, strep, urinalysis), stitches and some prescriptions filled on site. No appointment is needed. You can tell them online that you are on your way, but it does not reserve a time slot.

Watch out for the ER that looks like a clinic

In ChampionsGate, HCA Florida ChampionsGate Emergency (8460 Champions Gate Blvd, Davenport) is open 24/7, but it is a freestanding ER, part of HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital. Florida law requires these sites to post signs saying they are not an urgent care center and that they bill emergency department rates. Perfect for a real emergency. For strep throat, an urgent care center does the job and is usually cheaper.

Can a retail clinic handle it?

For simple problems, yes. MinuteClinic sits inside some CVS stores, takes walk-ins and is staffed by nurse practitioners and physician associates. Most services are for patients 18 months and older.

In the resort area, the clinic at 5308 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy in Kissimmee is open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closing around 1:30 p.m. for lunch. For what you can buy over the counter and which stores stay open late, see pharmacies in Orlando.

Can you see a doctor online while visiting Orlando?

Yes. What counts is where you are during the visit, not where you live. The AdventHealth app treats anyone located in Florida (and eight other states) for $89 without insurance, paid by card. Doctors can prescribe non-controlled medication, and if your problem cannot be handled by video, you are not charged. Confirm during sign-up that the app can take your case. CVS lists MinuteClinic Virtual Care at $89 cash pay too.

AdventHealth also runs a Care Concierge line for visitors, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern, at 844-471-4325. The team points you to the closest urgent care or ER, delivers prescriptions to your hotel or other lodging in the area, and delivers medical equipment such as crutches and walkers.

What will it cost, and will your insurance pay?

Without coverage, the whole bill is yours. AdventHealth publishes self-pay ranges for urgent care, which it describes as national averages, not its own price list:

Urgent care serviceNational self-pay range
Basic visit$100 to $250
Lab test$20 to $100+ each
X-ray$75 to $200+
Stitches$150 to $350

Traveling from another state. Your plan’s network still matters. Before a non-emergency visit, look up the clinic in your insurer’s app or call the number on your card, because an out-of-network visit can cost more. In a true emergency, the No Surprises Act bans surprise bills for most emergency services under group and individual health plans: out-of-network emergency care must be covered at in-network rates, with no prior authorization. Original Medicare works with any provider that takes Medicare anywhere in the U.S. Medicare Advantage plans may require network providers for non-emergency care.

Visiting from the UK or Canada. The UK government says there are no special arrangements for British visitors and that some hospitals ask non-U.S. residents for a deposit on admission. Send that request to your travel insurer first. Canada warns that provincial and territorial health plans may cover none, or only a small part, of medical costs abroad, and never pay up front. How much coverage to buy is in do you need travel medical insurance for Orlando.

In practice: on your first day at the house, save the full home address, your insurer’s phone number and the closest urgent care in every adult’s phone. Most centers close at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on weekends. After that, for something minor, use telehealth or the Lake Buena Vista center. For an emergency, call 911.
