Do you need travel medical insurance for Orlando?

Quick answer

No US law requires it for visitors on a B-2 visa or ESTA. But care is not free: an average US hospital stay cost the hospital about $16,700 in 2022, before doctor fees. Americans should check their plan's network rules. UK and Canadian visitors need a policy, since the GHIC and provincial plans offer little or nothing in the US.

Is travel medical insurance required to visit Orlando?

No. The US does not require visitors to carry health insurance. The federal rule for the B-2 visitor visa (22 CFR 41.31) asks for three things: intent to leave at the end of the stay, permission to enter another country afterward, and adequate financial arrangements for the trip. Insurance is not on the list. CBP’s ESTA page, for travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries, does not ask for it either.

Not required is different from not needed. A federal law, EMTALA, makes every hospital with an emergency department screen and stabilize anyone with an emergency, whether or not they can pay. The law guarantees treatment. It does not make treatment free, and the bill arrives later.

Does my health insurance cover me in Florida?

If you live in another state, usually yes for emergencies, but check the rules for everything else. HealthCare.gov explains that plans cannot require prior approval for emergency room care at an out-of-network hospital and cannot charge you more for it. Plans created before March 23, 2010 (grandfathered plans) are the exception.

Non-emergency care is where travelers get caught. According to HealthCare.gov, HMO and EPO plans generally cover out-of-network care only in an emergency. PPO plans let you go out of network at extra cost. An urgent care visit for an ear infection or a sprained ankle at Disney may fall into that gap, so call the number on your card before you travel and ask:

  • Which urgent care centers near Kissimmee are in network?
  • Does the plan have a travel or nationwide network?
  • Is a telehealth visit covered?

The federal No Surprises Act protects people with most types of health insurance from surprise out-of-network bills for emergency room visits. If you are uninsured or paying yourself, providers generally must give you a good faith estimate for care scheduled ahead or on request.

Medicare counts all 50 states as part of the US, so the travel limits on Medicare.gov apply outside the country, not in Florida. If you have a plan with a network, such as an HMO, the same network questions apply.

Does the UK GHIC or a Canadian provincial plan cover Orlando?

No for the GHIC, and very little for provincial plans. The NHS lists the countries where the UK Global Health Insurance Card works, and the US is not one of them. The NHS also says the GHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance. The UK government’s travel advice for the USA warns that medical treatment is expensive and that there are no special arrangements for British visitors.

The Government of Canada says provincial and territorial health plans rarely cover costs of medical care outside Canada, and when they do, it is usually a small part. It recommends buying travel health insurance even for a day trip to the United States.

How much does medical care cost in the US?

A lot, and without coverage you pay it. The figures below come from official and authoritative US sources and measure what it costs the hospital to deliver care. They are not the amount on the bill, and they leave out doctor fees billed separately.

SituationFigureWhat it measures
ER visit, not admitted (US, 2021)$750 on averageHospital cost per visit, no doctor fees
Hospital stay, all causes (US, 2022)about $16,700Hospital cost per stay
Stay for a broken leg, privately insured (2022)about $29,400Hospital cost per stay
Stay for a heart attack, privately insured (2022)about $28,700Hospital cost per stay
One hospital day in Florida (2024)$3,060Estimated hospital expense per adjusted inpatient day (US average: $3,297)

Sources: AHRQ HCUP Statistical Briefs 311 and 316, and KFF using American Hospital Association data, checked October 2026. Per-stay figures are our math: total cost divided by number of stays in the HCUP tables.

Since 2021, CMS has required hospitals to publish their prices in a full machine-readable file and a consumer-friendly list of shoppable services. Search “price transparency” on a hospital’s website to see its prices. For locations near the resorts, see where the nearest hospital is to your Orlando vacation home.

How much travel medical coverage should you buy?

No regulator publishes a minimum for a US trip. The NAIC, the association of US state insurance regulators, does not suggest an amount. The Government of Canada advises buying the best travel insurance you can afford.

Without an official number, use the table:

  • The limit has to cover a hospital stay, not only a clinic visit. One stay for a fracture or heart attack runs past $28,000 in hospital cost alone, before doctor fees.
  • Check whether the limit is per person. In a family of four, each person needs their own.
  • Look at medical evacuation and repatriation. The NAIC notes that standard US health insurance typically will not pay to transport you home. Canadians and UK visitors should check that the policy covers getting home and what that limit is.
  • Ask about deductibles and copays. Anything you pay per visit is part of the math.

Then compare the premium with what you would pay out of pocket for a single hospital day in Florida.

Does credit card travel insurance cover medical care?

Sometimes, and only if you meet the card’s conditions. Card benefits depend on the network and the issuing bank. As one example, Visa’s benefits document for cards issued in Brazil ties its international emergency medical coverage to buying the airfare with the card and issuing the insurance certificate at least 48 hours before the trip. Before you rely on any card, read its guide to benefits and confirm:

  1. Whether medical coverage is included at all, or only cancellation and baggage.
  2. Whether the trip has to be paid with the card.
  3. Who is covered: spouse, children, other travelers.
  4. The maximum trip length.
  5. The medical limit, compared with the table above.

What should you check in a travel medical policy?

Read the full terms, not the sales summary. These are the items that matter most for an Orlando trip:

ItemWhat to ask
Pre-existing conditionsThe NAIC lists them among the most common exclusions. Ask how the policy defines them and what is covered if a condition flares up.
ActivitiesThe NAIC warns that policies may exclude activities the insurer considers dangerous.
PregnancyThe Government of Canada warns that most travel policies do not automatically cover pregnancy-related conditions. See visiting Orlando pregnant.
COVID-19Confirm it is treated like any other sudden illness.
DentalAsk whether dental emergencies are covered and with what limit.
PaymentAsk whether the insurer pays the hospital directly or you pay and claim later. Canada warns that hospitals abroad may want payment up front.
Prior approvalThe NAIC suggests asking whether you need the insurer’s approval before getting care.
24/7 assistance lineSave the number and ask which languages it handles.

How do you use travel insurance in Orlando?

In a life-threatening emergency, call 911 first and notify the insurer afterward. In any other case, call the assistance line before you leave the house. It can tell you where to go and whether you need approval. The differences between urgent care, a doctor’s office and the ER are in sick on vacation in Orlando: urgent care, doctor or ER.

Keep everything:

  • the medical report with the diagnosis;
  • the itemized bill;
  • prescriptions and pharmacy receipts;
  • proof of anything you paid.

File within the policy’s notice deadline. If you take regular medication, bring enough for the whole trip, as explained in bringing medication on your trip to Orlando.

In practice: before you leave, save the policy number and the 24/7 assistance line in every adult’s phone, and leave a printed copy at the house with its full address. If someone gets sick at 2 a.m., whoever is awake calls the line before getting in the car. If it is an emergency, 911 comes first.
