Tipping in Orlando: when and how much?
At sit-down restaurants in Orlando, 15% to 20% of the bill is the usual tip, and it is normally not included. Counter service does not call for one. Check every bill, though: many restaurants add an automatic gratuity for groups, and Disney adds 18% for parties of 6 or more, which is easy to pay twice.

If you live in the US, tipping in Orlando works the way it does at home. The things that catch people out here are specific: automatic gratuities for large parties, a Florida law on how they must be shown, and a vacation home that has no daily housekeeping. If you are coming from the UK or Canada, the short version is that the tip is rarely on the bill, and at a sit-down restaurant it is expected.
Is tipping mandatory in Orlando?
No law requires it, but at a sit-down restaurant it is expected. Florida law itself defines a gratuity or tip as an amount the customer chooses to give, at the customer’s discretion. In practice almost everyone leaves one. In a Pew Research Center survey of 11,945 US adults in August 2023, 92% of people who eat at sit-down restaurants said they always or often tip.
Pay structure is the reason. Under federal law, restaurants can pay tipped staff a lower cash wage and count tips toward the minimum wage. The US Department of Labor puts the federal tipped cash wage at $2.13 an hour, and the employer must make up any shortfall.
Florida sets the bar much higher. Since September 30, 2026, the state minimum wage is $15.00 an hour, and tipped employees must get at least $11.98 an hour in direct wages plus tips, according to the official Florida Commerce notice. Those rates apply through December 31, 2027.
How much should you tip at a restaurant in Orlando?
At a sit-down restaurant, 15% to 20% is the usual range, with 20% for great service. That is a social norm, not a rule. In the same Pew survey, 57% of Americans said they would tip 15% or less on an average meal, and 25% said 20% or more.
At counter service (quick service in Disney terms, where you order at a register and pick up your food), a tip is not expected. Only 12% of Americans say they always or often tip at a fast casual restaurant. The payment screen may suggest percentages, but there is always a no tip or custom option.
Sales tax is added at the bottom of the bill, not in the menu price. Florida charges 6%, and each county adds its own surtax:
| Where you eat | Total sales tax on the bill |
|---|---|
| Orange County (Orlando) | 6.5% |
| Osceola County (Kissimmee) | 7.5% |
| Polk County (Davenport) | 7% |

Many people tip on the pre-tax amount. That is a custom, not a rule.
How do you know if the tip is already included?
Read the bill before you sign and look for “gratuity,” “service charge” or “auto gratuity.” Since July 1, 2026, Florida law requires any restaurant that adds an automatic fee (an “operations charge,” which covers automatic gratuities, service charges and credit card surcharges) to:
- state the amount or percentage and the purpose on the menu, website and ordering app;
- note on the face of the bill that the charge is included, with its amount or percentage;
- print separate receipt lines for gratuity, operations charge and sales tax.
Automatic gratuities for large parties are common in Orlando, and the law does not ban them. If you travel as a big family or group, expect one. The risk is tipping twice: a bill can already include the gratuity and still show a blank tip line.
A service charge is not the same as a tip. Under federal rules, a compulsory service charge is not treated as a tip and can be used by the restaurant toward wages. If you want to know where it goes, ask your server.
Does Disney add gratuity for large parties?
Yes. Disney adds an automatic 18% gratuity to the bill for parties of 6 or more, according to its official dining plan page. Disney dining plans do not include gratuities, except at Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, Cinderella’s Royal Table and Private Dining at the Grand Floridian. Everywhere else, you tip separately even on a plan.
At Disney Springs, the large party rule can vary from one restaurant to the next. Under Florida law, any automatic charge has to be on the menu. For the rest of the area, see our Disney Springs guide.
How much to tip for rideshare, bars and grocery delivery?
All three are customary, and two of them run through an app.
- Bars: Pew found 70% of Americans who buy a drink at a bar always or often tip. A dollar or two per drink, or 15% to 20% of a tab, is common practice.
- Uber: tipping is optional, the driver gets all of it, and you can add it up to 30 days after the trip in the app, on the website or from the email receipt. Cash tips are fine too.
- Lyft: 100% of tips go to drivers. In the app, you can tip within two hours of the ride and before you submit your rating. After that, the emailed receipt lets you add a tip for up to 30 days. In-app tips are capped at $50 or 200% of the fare.
- Instacart: 100% of the tip goes to the shopper. The app suggests a default amount, higher in bad weather. You can raise the tip up to 14 days after delivery and lower it up to 2 hours after, but not while the order is on its way.
Pew found 61% of Americans who use a taxi or rideshare always or often tip. If you plan to skip the rental car, compare costs in is Uber worth it in Orlando. For stores near the rental and delivery options, see grocery stores near Orlando vacation rentals.
What about valet, airport shuttles and tour guides?
A tip is customary for all three, and the amount is up to you. With valet, a few dollars in cash when the car comes back is common. Shuttle drivers usually get something, especially if they handle your bags. On a guided tour, tipping the guide at the end is common. Keep some $1 and $5 bills handy.
Should you tip the cleaning team at a vacation home?
It is optional. At a hotel, people tip housekeeping because rooms are serviced during the stay. At Disney Resort hotels, Deluxe rooms get daily housekeeping and Value and Moderate rooms get it every other day.
A vacation home works differently. There is no daily housekeeping: the home is cleaned before you arrive and after you leave, and that is covered by the cleaning fee. When you book direct with Orlando Best Place, that fee is part of the final price shown before payment, along with taxes. If you want to thank the crew, leave a labeled envelope on the kitchen counter on checkout day. Nobody will ask. For what comes with the home, see what is included in an Orlando vacation rental.
Pool service and pest control are arranged by the management company. No tip is expected from guests for those visits.
Orlando tipping at a glance
| Service | Common tip | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 15% to 20% | Check for “gratuity” or “service charge” first |
| Disney, party of 6 or more | 18% automatic | Already on the bill. Do not add it again |
| Counter service | Not expected | Screens suggest one, but no tip is an option |
| Bar | $1 to $2 per drink or 15% to 20% of the tab | Common practice |
| Uber and Lyft | Optional, in the app | 100% goes to the driver |
| Grocery delivery | App suggests an amount | On Instacart, 100% goes to the shopper |
| Valet | A few dollars | In cash, when the car comes back |
| Shuttle and tour guide | Your call | More common with bag help or a guided tour |
| Hotel housekeeping | Your call | Rooms are serviced during the stay |
| Vacation home cleaning | Optional | No daily housekeeping. Nobody will ask |
The percentages are custom, not law. The only charge you do not choose is an automatic one, and Florida requires it to be disclosed on the menu and the bill.
In practice: when you budget for sit-down meals, add 21% to 28% to menu prices: 6.5% to 7.5% sales tax plus a 15% to 20% tip. A $100 dinner on the menu in Kissimmee comes to $122.50 to $127.50 with the tip figured before tax. Cooking some meals at the house is the easiest way to bring that down.
