If you are in Orlando between late August and early November, you will see Halloween Horror Nights advertised everywhere. It is Universal’s horror event, and plenty of families decide at the last minute whether to fit a night into the trip. If you are staying in a vacation home in Kissimmee or Davenport, the question goes beyond the ticket: the event ends in the middle of the night and you drive yourself back.

What is Halloween Horror Nights?

Halloween Horror Nights is a separately ticketed night event inside Universal Studios Florida, built around haunted houses, scare zones and live shows. On event nights the park fills with costumed scare actors, fog and themed food. 2026 is the 35th edition. According to Universal, it started in 1991 as Fright Nights, with three nights and a single haunted house.

The 2026 theme is the “Infernal Carnival of Nightmares.” Per the official event page and Universal’s opening press release, this year has:

  • 10 haunted houses, all new: Stranger Things 5, Sinners, Hellraiser, Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness, Evil Dead Burn, Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, INVASION: Alien Abduction, H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!, MADLANDS: Caged Cannibals and Cybergoria.
  • 4 scare zones (open-air areas where scare actors roam the streets): Downtown Clowntown, Fortnitemares, Infernal Carnival of Nightmares and Sideshow of Decay.
  • 2 live shows: Stranger Things: Return to Hawkins, a nighttime lagoon show, and Nightmare Fuel: Blood Noir.
  • Rides open after dark, including Revenge of the Mummy, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D and MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack.

A haunted house here is a walk-through maze of indoor sets where actors jump out at you. The scare is the whole point.

Monday, October 12, 2026 is Columbus Day, a federal holiday. If your family drives down from Georgia or the Carolinas for the long weekend, the event is open that night. Halloween itself, October 31, falls on a Saturday this year and is a regular event night.

Premium Scream Night on October 19 is a limited-capacity night with shorter waits, included food and non-alcoholic drinks, free self-parking, and the only chance to wear a costume. The official page lists it as sold out.

Are the Halloween Horror Nights 2027 dates announced?

Not yet. As of early October 2026, Universal had not published 2027 dates, a theme or a house lineup on its official site or in its press room. If you are planning for fall 2027, use 2026 as a rough guide (late August to early November) and confirm once Universal makes the announcement.

What tickets are there and how much do they cost?

Your daytime park ticket does not get you in. Day tickets, annual passes and complimentary passes are not valid for Halloween Horror Nights, which has its own admission. These are the 2026 options:

Ticket or extraWhat you getBest for
Single-night ticketEntry on one night you chooseMost vacationers
Rush of Fear PassUp to 18 nights, the first ones only (Aug. 28 to Sept. 20)No longer useful in 2026
Frequent Fear PassUp to 31 nights, mostly Sunday through ThursdayGoing back more than once
Frequent Fear Plus and Ultimate Frequent FearMore nights; Ultimate covers every remaining night after your start dateSuperfans
Halloween Horror Nights ExpressExpress line one time at each haunted house and participating ridesBusy nights, short on time
R.I.P. TourGuided group, priority VIP entry to houses, reception and valet for one carThe full premium experience
Scream Early TicketUniversal Studios Florida entry from 2 p.m., with at least three houses open earlyGetting houses done before dark
Behind the Screams: Unmasking the HorrorDaytime lights-on tour of 3 or 6 housesThe curious, and the easily scared

Three things to know before you buy:

  1. Prices vary by date. Universal says single-night tickets cost less online than at the front gate and pricing changes by night. Extras are also priced by date, and all of them except the daytime tour require separate event admission.
  2. Frequent Fear skips October Fridays and Saturdays. Of the nights left in 2026, it is valid October 7, 8, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 21, 22, 25, 28 and 29, and November 1.
  3. Fear plus Express bundles are gone. Universal discontinued the multi-night passes that included Express.

Prices are posted on the official site and shift with the date, so we do not repeat them here. If you are weighing Express, the logic is similar to regular park days, covered in is Universal Express worth it.

Can kids go to Halloween Horror Nights?

Kids can get in, but Universal advises against it. The official warning says the event may be too intense for young children and is not recommended for children under 13. Costumes and costume masks are not allowed on regular nights.

Families with little ones have a better option at Disney, which runs a kid-focused Halloween party. We compare it in is Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party worth it. With teens, you know your kid best: horror movie fans usually love it, and a teen who scares easily may prefer the lights-on daytime tour.

How much is parking at Universal at night?

On event nights, standard parking fees apply until 2 a.m. On other evenings Universal waives regular self-parking after 6 p.m., but that free parking does not apply on Halloween Horror Nights event nights. Rates posted on the parking page, tax included:

  • Regular self-parking: $35 per car.
  • Prime (closer to the entrance): $50 to $60.
  • Valet: $81 for more than 2 hours on an event night.

Rideshare and taxi drop-off and pick-up is in the North Parking Garage, with no parking fee. For a side-by-side with Disney, see how much parking costs at Disney World and Universal.

What time does it end, and how do you get back to Kissimmee or Davenport?

The event ends at 2 a.m. every October night, so you will be driving back to your rental in the early morning hours. Universal recommends arriving at least an hour before the 6:30 p.m. gate opening to beat traffic and the security line. In practice, that means leaving the house mid-afternoon.

Distance matters. As the crow flies, Old Town in Kissimmee is about 10 miles (17 km) from Universal Studios, ChampionsGate about 17 miles (28 km) and Davenport near Posner Park about 20 miles (32 km). The drive is longer than that. The full comparison of areas is in where to stay in Orlando.

It also helps to know what a vacation home does not include. Guests at Universal’s on-site hotels get a priority event entrance from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and free transportation to the parks. Staying in a rental, you drive in and use the general entrance. In return, you get a pool for the afternoon, a kitchen for an early dinner and room for the whole group. If you are still deciding how to get around, read do you need a car in Orlando.

In practice: spend the morning at the pool, have an early dinner at the house and leave around 4:30 p.m. to be at Universal by 5:30. Pick a driver who will not drink before you go, since alcohol is sold at the event (21 and over). And skip the early park start the next morning: getting home close to 3 a.m. makes the next day a better pool day.

So, is Halloween Horror Nights worth it?

It is worth it for adults and teens 13 and up who love horror and are fine with a late night. You get 10 houses, 4 scare zones and 2 shows on one ticket. It is not worth it for families with young kids, for anyone who hates jump scares or for a group that needs to be up early the next day.

To get more out of it from a vacation home:

  • Pick Sunday through Thursday if your schedule allows. Those are the nights the Frequent Fear Pass focuses on, and October Fridays and Saturdays are left out of it.
  • Arrive early. Universal suggests using peak hours, when house lines are longest, for scare zones and shows.
  • Download the Universal Orlando app ahead of time for house wait times, showtimes and the event map.

If your trip pairs a scare night with several Universal days, a home closer to the parks shortens the drive back. Browse vacation homes near Universal.
