October is the turning point of the Orlando year. The summer heat eases, afternoon storms fade, and every major park spends the month dressed for Halloween. For a lot of families, it is also the first long weekend of the school year.

What is the weather like in Orlando in October?

Warm days and pleasant evenings. Based on NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Orlando International Airport, the average October high is 85 °F (29 °C) and the average low is 66 °F (19 °C). Day and night together average 76 °F (24 °C).

The same NOAA data show that a typical October has about 4 days at 90 °F (32 °C) or above, compared with about 18 in September. It also has about 5 nights below 60 °F (16 °C), which September never sees. A real chill is rare. The October record low is 38 °F (3 °C), set on October 24 and 25, 1937.

Early October vs. late October

The month cools steadily. The National Weather Service office in Melbourne, which covers Orlando, lists a normal high of 88 °F and low of 70 °F on October 1. By October 31 the normals are 81 °F and 62 °F. Early October still feels like summer. Late October feels like the start of fall, Florida style.

Days stay long, since Orlando is on daylight saving time all month. Per the U.S. Naval Observatory, the sun sets in Orlando at 7:11 p.m. on October 1, 2026, and at 6:41 p.m. on October 31.

Is October still rainy season in Orlando?

Only at the start. October is when Central Florida’s wet season ends. A study by the National Weather Service in Melbourne found that the dry season usually begins in October, when the first real cold front pushes drier air into the area. For Orlando, the median start date is October 15, and the median date of the first night below 60 °F is October 19.

The daily normals tell the same story. Normal rainfall drops from 0.17 inches a day on October 1 to 0.07 inches by October 31, and about 60% of the month’s rain falls by the 15th. The study also notes that the first front sometimes arrives with heavy rain, and that tropical systems can still bring downpours into November.

If dry weather is your top priority, the second half of the month is the safer bet.

Is it safe to visit Orlando in October?

Yes, but you are still in hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) defines the Atlantic season as June 1 to November 30, with a peak around September 10 and most activity between mid August and mid October. The first half of October falls inside that window.

That does not mean a hurricane hits Orlando every year. It means you should watch the NHC outlook in the days before you travel and read the cancellation policy before you book. We cover the real risk in Orlando hurricane season.

With younger kids. Disney’s Halloween party has 16 nights in October 2026, from 7 p.m. to midnight. On party nights, Magic Kingdom closes at 6 p.m. for regular ticket holders, per the hours published for the month. Plan your regular Magic Kingdom day around that. At SeaWorld, Spooktacular is a daytime event with trick-or-treating (with purchase of a reusable bag) at no extra ticket cost. We look at whether Disney’s party is worth the price in Is Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party worth it?

With teens and adults. Halloween Horror Nights at Universal and Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld are haunted house events built for mature audiences. SeaWorld says Howl-O-Scream includes blood, gore and violence, and costumes are not allowed. Universal’s event gets its own guide in Is Halloween Horror Nights worth it?

For food lovers. Food & Wine fills EPCOT all month with global food kiosks and the Eat to the Beat concert series. Disney says festival entry is included with EPCOT admission, and each dish is paid separately. Dates and tips are in When is the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival?

Halloween night falls on a Saturday in 2026, with Disney’s party, Horror Nights and the final night of Howl-O-Scream all running. For the full night, including ideas outside the parks, see What is Halloween like in Orlando?

How crowded are the Orlando theme parks in October?

October is a school month, so most weeks are manageable. The exception is the second weekend.

Columbus Day weekend: October 10 to 12, 2026

Columbus Day is a federal holiday on Monday, October 12, 2026, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Some school districts call it Indigenous Peoples’ Day. New York City public schools, for example, are closed that day for Italian Heritage and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Orange County Public Schools, the district that includes Orlando, has a student holiday the same Monday, so local families are off too. In 2027 the holiday falls on Monday, October 11.

Fall breaks

Some districts take the whole week off. In metro Atlanta, Gwinnett County Public Schools has Fall Break from October 12 to 16, 2026. If you are driving down from Georgia or the Carolinas, check your own district’s calendar, since fall break dates vary from place to place.

Visitors from Canada and the UK

Canadian Thanksgiving also falls on Monday, October 12, 2026, per the Government of Canada. In the UK, October half-term dates are set locally. GOV.UK points families to their local council’s website for exact dates.

For the quietest weeks of the year, see the least crowded times at the Orlando parks.

In practice: if your only option is Columbus Day weekend, use Saturday and Monday for the pool, shopping or a lighter park, and save Magic Kingdom and Universal for Tuesday through Thursday, when most schools are back. If a Halloween party is part of the plan, buy tickets as soon as dates are released. Every 2026 night of Disney’s party sold out.

What to pack for Orlando in October

Summer clothes for the day and one warm layer for the evening. Early in the month afternoons still reach 88 °F. Late in the month, a cold front can push the night below 60 °F.

  • Shorts, T-shirts and broken-in sneakers for park days.
  • A hoodie or light jacket, especially in the second half of the month.
  • A packable rain jacket or poncho for the first two weeks.
  • Sunscreen and a hat. The October sun is still strong.
  • A costume, if you want one. Disney welcomes costumes at its party as long as they follow the park’s published guidelines. Howl-O-Scream does not allow them.
