How to celebrate a birthday at Disney World and in Orlando?
At Disney World, ask for a free birthday button at any park Guest Relations or Disney hotel front desk and wear it: Cast Members tend to wish you a happy birthday all day. Participating table-service restaurants sell a $45 Mickey celebration cake. Universal hands out free buttons too. At a vacation home, party rules depend on the resort.

A birthday in Orlando usually happens in two places. One is the park, where Disney and Universal both have their own way of recognizing the guest of honor. The other is home base at night, with candles, cake and the people who matter. Both fit in the same trip, and planning them separately makes each one easier.
Does Disney World give you anything free on your birthday?
Yes: a free birthday button with the guest’s name written on it. It is the main official birthday perk at Walt Disney World. Park tickets, cakes and gift packages are paid extras.
According to Disney, you can pick up the button at any Guest Relations location in the parks and at the front desk of any Disney Resort hotel. Panelists on planDisney, Disney’s official Q&A site, add that many park shops hand them out too. Just tell the Cast Member the name and what you are celebrating. There are buttons for birthdays, first visits, anniversaries and a general “I’m Celebrating” version for anything else.
If you are staying at a vacation home, there is no Disney hotel front desk on your way in. Stop at Guest Relations at the park entrance first thing, before you join the first line.
What do Cast Members do for your birthday?
They wish you a happy birthday, a lot. Cast Members, as Disney calls its employees, read the name on the button and greet the birthday guest in lines, shops and restaurants. Characters also tend to make the meet and greet a little more special when they know.
There is no official list of birthday freebies. planDisney is clear that any extra surprise at a restaurant is up to the Cast Members and depends on availability. The best approach is to expect nothing and keep the button where people can see it, on a shirt rather than a backpack strap.
You can also note the celebration ahead of time. Per planDisney, you can tell Disney you are celebrating a birthday through the My Disney Experience app or by phone. It does not guarantee anything extra, but it lets the team in on it.
Can you order a birthday cake at a Disney World restaurant?
Yes, at participating table-service restaurants, and only with a dining reservation. The official option is the Mickey Mouse celebration cake. The table below sums up what is free and what you pay for, based on the official pages as checked in October 2026.
| What | How it works | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Disney birthday button | Park Guest Relations and Disney Resort hotel front desks | Free |
| Mickey Mouse celebration cake | Participating restaurants only, with a reservation. Feeds 4 to 6 | $45 plus tax and gratuity |
| Gift basket or balloons (Magical Floral & Gifts) | Delivered only to Disney Resort hotels and select official hotels | From $75 (baskets) or $30 (balloons), plus a $10 delivery fee |

The cake comes in dark, milk or white chocolate. The ears can say “Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations,” or stay blank. Custom flavors and custom writing are not available. The charge goes on your restaurant bill. Once you pick the restaurant, you cannot move the cake to a different one. It contains gluten, wheat, soy, milk and eggs, and is made in facilities that may handle peanuts and tree nuts.
The participating list includes many family favorites with characters, such as Cinderella’s Royal Table and Be Our Guest at Magic Kingdom, Akershus Royal Banquet Hall at EPCOT, Tusker House at Animal Kingdom, Hollywood & Vine at Hollywood Studios and Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary. Disney says same-day orders are possible in person at the restaurant’s host podium, but availability is limited.
If you want a cake to take back to the house, Amorette’s Patisserie at Disney Springs sells cakes and, according to Disney, makes custom cakes to order.
What about a gift basket in the room?
Disney’s gift service delivers to the front desk of Disney Resort hotels and select official hotels, not to vacation homes. If you are renting a house, plan the decorations another way, covered below.
How do you celebrate a birthday at Universal Orlando?
The same way, with a free button. Universal’s official blog says you can get one at Guest Services at Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Epic Universe or any Universal hotel. Team Members will personalize it for you.
Universal says many Team Members and fellow guests tend to offer well wishes when they see it, and wearing it at shows or character meets might earn a special shoutout. When you book a Universal restaurant, add the occasion in the notes field. The Universal hotels sell celebration cakes and in-room gifts if you call ahead, but that only works if you are staying there.
Can you throw a kids’ birthday party at an Orlando vacation rental?
Yes, and a house is the natural place for it: a living room for everyone, a full kitchen to keep the cake and often a private pool. Three things cover most of the planning.
Decorations. Balloons, banners, candles and paper plates are easy to find at party supply stores and the large supermarkets around the area. If you are driving down from Georgia or the Carolinas, packing a box of decorations in the trunk is the simplest option. You can also order online and ship to the house; first check whether you can receive packages at the rental.
Cake. The big supermarkets in Orlando and Kissimmee usually have an in-store bakery with ready-made cakes and custom orders. Ask about lead time at the counter on day one. To pick a store, see where to buy groceries near Orlando vacation rentals.
Resort rules. Every vacation home resort sets its own rules on outside visitors, quiet hours and use of shared areas. A small party for the people on the reservation is not the same as inviting local friends over. Read the rules at Orlando vacation home resorts and tell the management company before inviting anyone who is not on the booking.
If the party is by the pool, assign one adult whose only job is watching the water. Cake, balloons and music are distracting. The details are in how to keep kids safe at a vacation rental pool.
A surprise that works well with kids is a themed bedroom. Some homes have rooms decorated around movies, superheroes or princesses, and booking one without saying a word becomes part of the gift. See what they look like in Orlando vacation homes with themed rooms.
In practice: on the birthday, get to the park early, grab the button at Guest Relations and book lunch at a restaurant that serves the Mickey cake. Head back to the house in the late afternoon while the kids still have energy, and do candles at home with a supermarket cake and decorations someone set up earlier.
What about a milestone birthday with a big group?
Plan around the group, not just the parks. A sweet sixteen, a 40th or a grandparent’s 70th often brings cousins, friends and several generations to Orlando at once. The birthday button works at any age, while Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is only for kids 3 to 12.
For a big group, the hard part is keeping everyone together at night. A house with several bedrooms and a large living room lets the whole crew eat, celebrate and sleep under one roof. Our tips for that are in how to plan a group trip to Orlando, and the larger homes are on vacation homes for large groups.
