Can you receive Amazon packages at an Orlando vacation rental?

Shipping things to Orlando instead of packing them is one of the quiet perks of a vacation home. If you are driving down from Georgia or the Carolinas, it frees up the trunk. If you are flying, it saves you from checking a bag full of diapers, sunscreen and pool floats. It works well when you plan it. It goes wrong when the box shows up on the wrong day or at the wrong gate.

Can you ship Amazon packages to a vacation rental in Orlando?

Usually you can, but the home decides, not you. Every management company and every resort community sets its own rules, and some homes do not accept deliveries at all. So ask first.

Before you place the order, confirm:

• Does the home accept packages? And from which carriers: Amazon, UPS, FedEx or USPS.
• What is the exact address? House number, street, city, state and ZIP code. The mailing address can carry a different city name than the one in the listing. Use what the manager gives you, not what you find on a map.
• Where will the package be left? At the front door, on the lanai (the covered back porch) or somewhere else you agree on.
• Is the resort gated? That changes how delivery works, as explained below.

How should you address a package to a vacation rental?

Use the full address and the name of the guest who is staying there. The guest’s name on the label tells the driver, the gate and the home’s team whose package it is.

A few habits prevent most problems:

• Full guest name on the first line, matching the reservation.
• Address copied exactly as the manager sent it, with no abbreviations of your own.
• A cell phone number in the contact field, so the carrier can reach you.
• Save it as a temporary address. Delete it after the trip so your next order does not go to a house you have left.

When should you schedule the delivery?

Aim for arrival after your check-in day and at least two days before checkout. A box that arrives before you do could be received by another guest or sit on the porch. A box due on your last day can slip and arrive after you are gone.

At checkout, Amazon and the big retailers show an estimated delivery date. Pick an option that lands in the middle of your stay, not at the edges. If the estimate is tight, switch to a pickup location.

In practice: place the bigger orders on day one or two of the trip, once you are settled, and group them into as few deliveries as you can. If the home is in a gated resort, send the tracking screenshot to whoever manages the home. That way everyone knows what is coming and when.

Can delivery drivers get into a gated resort?

They can, as long as they are let in. If the resort has a staffed gate or an electronic gate, the driver has to get through it, and a driver who is not cleared may be turned away. The package may then go back, stay at the gatehouse or be taken to a pickup location, depending on the carrier and the community’s rules.

What are the options if the home does not accept packages?

Send it to a pickup point. The retailers and carriers run official options, and several are close to the vacation home areas.

Details worth knowing:

• Amazon: you have to pick the location through Amazon’s own pickup search and save it to your address book. Amazon says that if you type the locker address by hand, its system will not recognize the order and cannot deliver there. The recipient name must match the ID of whoever picks it up. If nobody collects the package, it goes back to Amazon.
• Someone else can collect it. For Lockers and Counters, forward the delivery email with the code to another adult in your group.
• UPS: there are UPS Access Point locations near the homes, such as the Staples on Posner Blvd in Davenport. UPS accepts a driver’s license or other government ID.
• FedEx: bring a government issued photo ID. If the address on your ID does not match the label, which is the case when you ship to a rental, FedEx also asks for the tracking number and an alternative proof such as a credit card statement.
• Target: if you cannot get there within 3 days, you can extend the window by 3 more days on the order details page, as long as there are no fresh or frozen groceries.

What happens to packages that arrive after checkout?

Do not count on getting them. After you leave, the home is cleaned and the next guests move in, and a box left at the door can be lost. If tracking shows a delay near the end of your trip, contact the team right away to see what is possible at that home.

If FedEx is carrying it, you can still redirect the package to a pickup location, as long as you ask before midnight the day before scheduled delivery. FedEx notes that some shippers block this change. With Amazon, the safest move is to choose a pickup location when you order.

Do online purchases count toward your customs allowance at home?

They do if you are flying home to another country. Anything you order online and carry home in your luggage counts the same as something bought at a store. For travelers from the US, none of this applies, since it is a domestic trip.
