June is when Orlando’s summer settles in. The heat holds, afternoon storms become part of the daily routine, hurricane season opens on the 1st and schools across the country let out. For many families it is the first real chance of the year for a week at the parks and the pool.

What is the weather like in Orlando in June?

Hot, humid and rainy, but the rain comes in bursts. Based on NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Orlando International Airport, the average June high is 91 °F (33 °C) and the average low is 72 °F (22 °C). Nights barely cool off: day and night together average 81 °F (27 °C).

The month warms a little as it goes. The National Weather Service office in Melbourne, which covers Orlando, lists a normal high of 90 °F and low of 70 °F on June 1. By June 30 the normals are 92 °F and 73 °F.

On average, June is Orlando’s wettest month, slightly ahead of August and July. It is also when 90 °F afternoons become the norm, with about 20 of them in a typical June. The Florida Climate Center notes that at the height of summer, the mid-afternoon heat index runs about 10 °F above the actual temperature because of the humidity.

Rain totals swing a lot from year to year. The wettest June on record, in 1968, brought 18.28 inches. The driest, in 1931, had just 0.88 inch. Recent Junes have also run warm: per the NWS, June 2026 was the fourth warmest June since 1892, with an average temperature of 83.6 °F (28.7 °C). The June record high is 101 °F (38 °C).

Does it rain every day in Orlando in June?

Not all day. The National Weather Service in Melbourne says the wet season in east central Florida usually starts in late May and in some years is delayed into June. From then on, rain is driven by the heat of the day.

The Florida Climate Center describes the pattern: thunderclouds build during the morning and brief, heavy rain usually follows in the afternoon. Virtually every summer rainstorm comes with thunder and lightning. That makes the morning the best window for anything outdoors.

What to do when you hear thunder

The National Weather Service keeps it simple: if you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. No place outside is safe during a thunderstorm. Safe shelter is a substantial building with electricity or plumbing, or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with the windows up. Stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder.

That applies to the pool at your rental. The NWS says to get out of the water and to stay off porches during a storm. A screened pool enclosure, or lanai, is not shelter. Indoors, the NWS also advises avoiding showers, baths and faucets while lightning is nearby.

The caution is worth it. In the lightning fatality data published by the NWS, Florida had more lightning deaths than any other state from 1959 to 2017. The risk drops sharply for people who follow one rule: when thunder roars, go indoors.

Weather also affects the parks. Disney’s ticket terms say attractions and hours may change or close because of weather, and that water parks are subject to weather closures. For ideas on how to fill those breaks, see things to do in Orlando on a rainy day.

Is June hurricane season in Orlando?

Yes, the season starts on June 1, but June is the very beginning of it, not the peak. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

The NHC’s averages for 1991 to 2020 put June in perspective:

Atlantic season milestoneAverage date
Official startJune 1
First named stormJune 20
First hurricaneAugust 11
Statistical peakSeptember 10
Official endNovember 30

Source: National Hurricane Center, 1991 to 2020 climatology.

In a typical year, the entire Atlantic basin has one named storm by the end of June, and the first hurricane does not form until August. That does not mean zero risk. It means that in June, checking NHC updates in the days before you travel is usually enough. How busy are Orlando theme parks in June?

More school-age families are on vacation, because summer break begins. In Orange County, which includes Orlando, the last day of school for 2026 to 2027 is Wednesday, May 26, 2027, and the same date applies in Gwinnett County, in metro Atlanta. New York City public schools run until Monday, June 28.

Juneteenth National Independence Day falls on Saturday, June 19, 2027, so federal employees observe it on Friday, June 18, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Father’s Day, set by federal law as the third Sunday in June, lands on June 20. Together they make June 18 to 20 a three-day weekend for many families. For the calmest stretches of the year, see the least crowded times at the Orlando parks.

In practice: in June, get to the park at opening, do the outdoor rides first and head back to the house in the early afternoon, before the storms. Have lunch, cool off in the A/C and save the pool for after the rain, once 30 minutes have passed since the last thunder. If fireworks matter to your family, go back to the park in the evening.

Things to do in Orlando in June

June is a month of long days and water. Per the U.S. Naval Observatory, the sun rises around 6:28 a.m. and sets around 8:19 p.m. at the start of the month and 8:27 p.m. at the end. The summer solstice is June 21, 2027, at 10:11 a.m. Orlando time.

  • Parks early, pool in the afternoon. Mornings are cooler and less likely to bring lightning.
  • Indoor attractions mid-afternoon. Shows and indoor rides keep the day moving when a storm rolls in.
  • Water parks in the morning. With lightning in the area, swimming stops. Check the calendar before you buy, since Disney’s terms allow for weather closures.
  • Late fireworks. With sunset after 8 p.m., park nights start late. With small kids, pick one or two nights instead of every night.
  • A slower Father’s Day. Sunday, June 20, is a good day for a cookout and pool time at the house.

Do you need a heated pool in Orlando in June?

No. June is the month when an unheated pool makes the most sense. With an average low of 72 °F and a high of 91 °F, the water is comfortable without heat, and paying for it in June makes no difference for most people. We explain when pool heat is worth it in Orlando pool heat cost.

Plan around the sun instead. From late morning to mid-afternoon, the pool deck gets very hot. Sunscreen, hats and water within reach matter, especially for kids. And again, thunder means everyone out of the water. If the pool is a big part of your trip, browse homes with a private pool.

What to pack for Orlando in June

Pack light clothes and something for rain. Days top 90 °F and nights stay near 72 °F.

  • Light, quick-dry clothing. Jeans and heavy cotton feel miserable in humid heat.
  • A poncho or compact umbrella for the afternoon storm.
  • Sandals or sneakers that can get wet.
  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
  • A light layer for restaurants and attractions with strong A/C.
  • A change of clothes for the kids on park days.
