What to do in Orlando on a rainy day?

Quick answer

Summer rain in Orlando usually comes as short afternoon thunderstorms, and the theme parks rarely close for ordinary rain. Outdoor rides and water parks can pause for lightning. Use that window for indoor rides, museums, an aquarium, bowling, an escape room, an enclosed mall or a movie and cooking afternoon at your vacation home.

A rainy forecast in Orlando rarely means a lost day. What matters is timing. If you know when the storms tend to show up, you can fit in the park, an indoor plan and the pool without wasting a single vacation day.

Does it rain all day in Orlando?

Rarely, at least in summer. From May through October, rain usually arrives as short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Melbourne, which covers Orlando, more than 90% of the area’s lightning happens from May through October between noon and midnight.

The cause is the sea breeze. As the day heats up, one breeze pushes inland from the Atlantic coast and another from the Gulf coast. They collide over the middle of the peninsula, right where Orlando sits, and that is where storm clouds build. The NWS calls Central Florida the “Lightning Capital” of the United States, and July is the state’s top month for lightning.

Winter works differently. There is less rain, and when it comes it usually rides in with a cold front, sometimes as a gray, drizzly day. The month-by-month rainfall numbers are in our Orlando weather by month guide.

One NWS rule applies to everything below: when thunder roars, go indoors. A real building or a car with a hard roof will protect you. A picnic shelter, a shed or a convertible will not. Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before heading back outside.

Do Orlando theme parks close when it rains?

Generally, no. None of the major parks announces closures for ordinary rain. What their official rules allow for is attractions closing because of weather, which in practice hits outdoor rides when lightning is nearby, plus water park closures. Disney and Universal do not publish a detailed lightning policy with a set distance or wait time. Here is what each park does publish:

ParkWhat the official policy saysWhat to do
Walt Disney World theme parksTicket terms say attractions and shows can close due to weather, without liability to DisneySave indoor rides for the afternoon
Disney water parksAt least one is open each day, except on days with inclement weather. Day-of closures can happen with little notice and do not show on the park calendarGo in the morning and check the forecast first
Universal OrlandoThe official safety guide says parks, attractions and entertainment may close due to weatherWatch the official app, which tells you when outdoor rides reopen
SeaWorld OrlandoThe park usually stays open. If rides close for over 60 minutes due to lightning, wind, heat, rain or snow, you can get a free return visit (Weather-or-Not Assurance)Ask at Guest Relations or request it online within one week

Policies checked in October 2026. At SeaWorld, annual pass members, complimentary tickets and Discovery Cove tickets are not eligible.

Which rides are indoors at Disney, Universal and Epic Universe?

Many of the headline rides are inside buildings. Disney’s own descriptions call Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom a roller coaster in the dark and the Haunted Mansion a dark ride. Spaceship Earth travels inside EPCOT’s geosphere, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is one of the largest fully enclosed coasters in the world.

Universal’s official blog lists these among its indoor rides:

  • Universal Studios Florida: Revenge of the Mummy, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D, The Simpsons Ride and E.T. Adventure.
  • Islands of Adventure: The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Skull Island: Reign of Kong.
  • Epic Universe: Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry and Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.

Universal notes that everything is weather permitting, but these rides are your best bet while the outdoor coasters wait for the storm to clear.

What are the best indoor things to do in Orlando?

There are plenty, and many sit on International Drive, the tourist corridor between Universal and the convention center. Visit Orlando, the city’s official tourism bureau, lists these and many more:

A few details that help with planning:

  • ICON Park offers free parking on floors 4 through 7 of its garage and sells combo tickets for several attractions.
  • Orlando Science Center is closed on Wednesdays, except during Orange County Public Schools breaks. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and walk-up tickets cost $3 more than online.
  • Orlando Museum of Art is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed Mondays and holidays.
  • Crayola Experience opens daily at 10 a.m. and suggests 3 to 4 hours for a visit. It is one of the easiest picks for indoor things to do with young kids.
  • Bowling: Visit Orlando points to Splitsville at Disney Springs, Kings on International Drive, and the lanes inside Main Event, Dezerland Park and Andretti.
  • Escape rooms: International Drive has several, including The Escape Game and Escapology. Think Escape Games is near Old Town in Kissimmee, and Universal’s Great Movie Escape is at CityWalk.
  • Indoor shows for adults and families: Blue Man Group at ICON Park (from $59 per adult) and Drawn to Life by Cirque du Soleil and Disney at Disney Springs.

In Kissimmee, close to most vacation home resorts, Medieval Times is the best-known indoor option. Downtown, the Hart Memorial Library has a virtual reality lab with Meta Quest headsets, according to Experience Kissimmee, the Osceola County tourism bureau.

You will need a car or a rideshare to reach most of these. Drive time from your rental to International Drive varies a lot by resort, so check the map before you head out in the rain.

Are Orlando malls and outlets good on a rainy day?

Indoor malls, yes. Outlets, not so much. Visit Orlando describes The Mall at Millenia and The Florida Mall as the city’s premier indoor malls. The four outlet centers near the parks, including Orlando International Premium Outlets and Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets, are open-air, with storefronts along outdoor walkways. Disney Springs is open-air too, even though its shops and restaurants are indoors.

On a stormy afternoon, head to an enclosed mall and save the outlets for a sunny morning. If your trip lands in late November, see how Black Friday works in Orlando.

What to do at your vacation home on a rainy day?

The house is the best shelter of the trip. Everyone has room, and nobody has to drive through a downpour. A few ideas:

  • Game room. Some homes have a game room with pool, foosball or arcade games. If that matters to your group, check the amenity list before you book.
  • Movie night, in the afternoon. Close the blinds, make microwave popcorn and put on the movie whose characters the kids will meet at the park tomorrow.
  • Cook together. A full kitchen turns a rainy afternoon into a slow lunch, a batch of cookies with the kids or the dinner there is never time for on a park day.
  • Actually rest. If you hit the park at rope drop, a nap now means everyone makes it to the fireworks tonight.

Two safety notes from the NWS. Get out of the pool at the first rumble of thunder: the screened lanai, the screened patio common on Florida homes, is not lightning shelter. And during the storm, skip the shower and stay away from corded electronics, since the NWS advises keeping away from plumbing and electrical appliances. Thirty minutes after the last thunder, the pool is back on, and late afternoons after a storm are often beautiful.

In practice: in summer, do the park from about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and ride the outdoor coasters first. When the sky turns dark, move to the indoor rides or head back to the house. Keep one indoor backup for each day (a museum, the aquarium or bowling), and save the pool for the late afternoon once the storm has passed.
