Is Kissimmee safe?

Quick answer

Kissimmee is not a dangerous place to vacation, but it does have crime. FBI data show the city's 2025 violent crime rate above the US average and property crime close to it. The county area where most vacation home resorts sit had rates below the national average. The most common risk for visitors is theft from cars.

Search for a vacation home near Disney World and you will land on a Kissimmee address almost every time. Asking whether it is safe is fair, and the honest answer depends on which Kissimmee you are looking at. The numbers below come from the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the state agency that compiles police data, checked in October 2026.

Is Kissimmee a dangerous place to stay?

No, it is not a dangerous place for a vacation, but it is not crime free either. According to FBI data, the City of Kissimmee had a violent crime rate above the US average in 2025 and a property crime rate close to the average. The unincorporated part of Osceola County, where most vacation home resorts sit, had rates below the national average in its last complete year of data.

For visitors, the most likely problem is theft, mostly of things left inside a car. A few simple habits, covered below, prevent most of it.

Does a Kissimmee address mean the City of Kissimmee?

Not always. Kissimmee is the postal name for an area much larger than the city. Many addresses in ZIP codes 34746 and 34747 say “Kissimmee” but sit outside city limits, in unincorporated Osceola County. There, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office patrols, not the city police.

We ran a few well known addresses through the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder. Reunion, ChampionsGate, Windsor Hills and Margaritaville Resort Orlando are all in Osceola County, outside the City of Kissimmee. Solterra, with a Davenport address, is in Polk County and outside Davenport city limits. As a check, Kissimmee City Hall on Church Street comes back inside the city. To compare the areas before you book, see where to stay in Orlando.

What do the crime numbers say about Kissimmee?

The numbers show a clear gap between the city and the rest of the county. The table uses the rate per 100,000 residents, the same measure the FBI uses for the national average.

Source: FBI Crime Data Explorer for the rates and FDLE (FIBRS) for thefts from vehicles, checked in October 2026. Violent crime is murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crime is burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson.

Three things to keep in mind when reading the table:

  • The Osceola sheriff’s year is 2023. Its 2024 and 2025 data were incomplete in both the FBI and FDLE databases when we checked. Compare that row with the 2023 national average.
  • Rates count residents only. The City of Kissimmee had about 86,000 residents in 2025 by the FBI’s count. Crimes against visitors are included in the totals, but visitors are not included in the population, which pushes rates up in tourist areas.
  • The city’s trend is down. From 2024 to 2025, its violent crime rate fell 10% and its property crime rate fell 15%.

In the City of Kissimmee, most violent offenses in 2025 were aggravated assaults: 260 of 392 reported to FDLE. There were 2 homicides that year.

Are gated vacation home resorts safer?

Gated resorts control who drives in, which cuts down on outside traffic on the inner streets. How strict that control is varies. At the Retreat at ChampionsGate, for example, there are four staffed gatehouses, every driver must be registered for the dates of the stay, and a security company runs a 24/7 roaming patrol, according to the community’s published guest rules. Other resorts use a gate with a code or a card. Orlando Best Place homes are in resorts, and you can look at each one on the resorts page.

A gate does not replace common sense. It cannot see an open garage or an unlocked car in the driveway. When you leave, lock the front door and the sliding door to the pool, close the garage and take the key. Before the trip, ask whoever manages the home how resort entry works, especially if your flight lands late.

How do you avoid car break-ins in Kissimmee?

Theft from vehicles is one of the most reported types of larceny for both Osceola agencies. The pattern repeats: a purse, backpack, shopping bag or device left in plain sight.

  • Leave nothing visible in the car, not even for five minutes at an outlet or grocery store parking lot.
  • If you are making another stop after shopping, move bags to the trunk before you leave the first parking lot.
  • Passports, cash and documents stay at the house, in the safe if there is one, never in the car.
  • Lock the car even in the garage or the driveway.
  • Do not leave the car key or the gate remote visible near a window.

If you are flying in and still deciding how to get around, see do you need a car in Orlando. If you are driving down from Georgia or the Carolinas, the same rules apply to a car loaded with luggage at a rest stop or a hotel lot on the way.

Is it safe to walk along US-192?

US-192, also called Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, is not built for walking, and crossing outside a signal is dangerous. Osceola County’s road safety plan, adopted in November 2024, found that 60% of crashes with a death or serious injury happen on just 3% of county roads. Pedestrian crashes are one of the three most common crash types on those roads, and residents named US-192 among the ones that worry them most.

Work is underway. FDOT is rebuilding 5.7 miles of US-192 between Bamboo Lane and Main Street in Kissimmee, with new signalized pedestrian crossings. Construction started in summer 2025, completion is estimated for fall 2026, and the budget is $26 million. Across the region, Smart Growth America, which tracks pedestrian deaths in US metro areas, ranked Orlando, Kissimmee and Sanford 18th in its 2024 report and 25th in its 2026 report, after one of the largest drops in the country.

What this means for visitors:

  • Cross only at a signalized intersection and wait for the walk signal.
  • With kids, drive or take a rideshare even for short trips along US-192.
  • If you have to walk at night, wear light colors and use your phone’s flashlight.

Is Kissimmee safe at night?

At night, the bigger concern is traffic. In Osceola County, 48% of crashes with a death or serious injury happen at night. Across Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, MetroPlan Orlando, the regional transportation planning agency, found that nighttime pedestrian deaths per capita rose 37% over a decade, while daytime deaths fell 23%.

To drive at night with less stress, set the GPS before you pull out, avoid getting on the highway tired after a long flight or a long drive, and park in well lit areas. If you see an impaired or aggressive driver, the Florida Highway Patrol asks you to call *FHP (*347) from a cell phone or 911. For ideas on how to spend the evening, see things to do in Orlando at night.

What is the emergency number in Kissimmee?

The emergency number is 911, for police, fire and ambulance. For a theft that already happened, with no suspect around, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office has a non-emergency line, (407) 348-2222, where you can file a report. Keep the full address of the home and the resort name written down, because that is the first thing the dispatcher asks.

For problems with the house, such as a lock, gate or alarm, the Orlando Best Place team answers 24/7 in English, Portuguese and Spanish on WhatsApp at +1 (407) 719-1493.

Is Kissimmee safe from hurricanes?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with a peak on September 10, according to the National Hurricane Center. Kissimmee is inland, far from the coast. What that means for your trip is in Orlando hurricane season, and refund rules are in vacation rental cancellations and hurricanes.

In practice: pick the home by its resort, not by the city name on the address. Ask how the gate works, leave nothing visible in the car and drive across US-192 even when the restaurant looks close.
