What is Christmas in Orlando like?

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, a federal holiday, so a lot of families get a long weekend right as school lets out. Orlando is where many of them head. In AAA’s 2025 year-end travel forecast, Orlando ranked first among domestic destinations, in a holiday period when 122.4 million Americans were expected to travel at least 50 miles from home.

What is the weather like in Orlando at Christmas?

Mild during the day and cool at night. Based on National Weather Service daily normals (the 1991 to 2020 average), December 25 has a normal high of 73 °F (23 °C) and a normal low of 51 °F (11 °C).

The swings are what catch people off guard. A cold front can drop temperatures overnight. The Christmas Day records show the range: the warmest was 86 °F (30 °C) in 2015, and the coldest was 21 °F (-6 °C) in 1983.

Are Orlando theme parks open on Christmas Day?

Yes. Disney, Universal and SeaWorld all opened on December 25, 2025. These were the logged hours on ThemeParks.wiki:

Christmas 2026 hours were not out yet in October 2026. Disney’s calendar only ran to mid December at that point.

On December 25, 2026, the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays is running (November 27 to December 30). Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is not: its last night is December 22. Disney Jollywood Nights skips Christmas too, with its last pre-holiday night on December 23 and two more on January 3 and 5, 2027.

Plan for crowds. Disney’s ticket terms state that park admission is not guaranteed and that park reservations depend on capacity. Christmas week, buy date-based tickets before you travel and get to the gate before opening. The calmer weeks of the year are in the least crowded times at the Orlando parks.

What is open in Orlando on Christmas Day?

The parks, some restaurants and the drugstores. Most grocery and big box stores close, so finish shopping by Christmas Eve morning.

• Publix: closed. The chain closes three days a year (Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter) and closes early on Christmas Eve, with hours posted in stores before the holiday.
• Walmart, Target, Costco and Sam’s Club: closed on Christmas 2025, per CBS News. Walmart reopened on the 26th.
• CVS and Walgreens: open on Christmas 2025, with store and pharmacy hours varying by location.
• Restaurants: Applebee’s and IHOP opened on Christmas 2025, as did many McDonald’s and Dunkin’ locations. Chick-fil-A and Taco Bell closed. Check the specific location before you drive.

If your family does a big Christmas dinner, the vacation home kitchen is the easiest place for it. Buy the turkey or ham by December 23.

Every major park has a holiday lineup, and there are free options outside them. Dates below are from the official sites for the 2026 season.

Disney’s ticketed parties. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party runs 7 p.m. to midnight and costs $189 to $229 per ticket plus tax, depending on the night. Disney Jollywood Nights runs 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at $169 to $199 plus tax. Both take $10 off for kids 3 to 9, and neither needs a regular park ticket that day.

EPCOT. The festival brings holiday traditions from around the world to the park, plus visits with Santa Claus. It is also the season for the Candlelight Processional, where a celebrity narrator tells the Christmas story with a massed choir and a 50 piece orchestra.

Universal and SeaWorld. Both include their holiday events with regular admission. Universal has Grinchmas in Seuss Landing, the Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s and “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle” at night. SeaWorld ends its event nights with Holiday Reflections, a fireworks show over the lagoon, through January 1.

Free or cheap. Disney Springs charges no admission, and the Tree Stroll lines its walkways with decorated trees. In Celebration, next to Kissimmee, Now Snowing makes it “snow” downtown every evening, free per Visit Orlando. ICE! at Gaylord Palms is ticketed: more than 2 million pounds of carved ice, themed to The Polar Express in 2026.

Can you put up a Christmas tree in a vacation rental?

Usually yes, but ask first. Each home has its own rules, set by the owner and the management team, so message the team before you buy anything.

What tends to work: a small artificial tree, new light strands, battery candles and decorations that sit on furniture instead of taping or nailing to walls. The U.S. Fire Administration’s holiday guidance applies here too:

• Keep the tree at least 3 feet from heat sources such as fireplaces, space heaters, candles and heat vents.
• Water a real tree every day. A dry tree burns very hot and very fast.
• Throw out light strands with frayed or pinched wires, and follow the maker’s limit on connected strands.
• Keep real candles at least 12 inches from anything that burns.

How busy is Christmas week in Orlando, and what does it cost?

It is one of the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year. In Orange County, public school winter break runs December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027, and families from across the country are off at the same time.

Most of them drive. AAA expected 109.5 million of the 122.4 million year-end travelers in 2025 to go by car. In the same forecast, INRIX traffic data flagged the Saturday that opened the break and the Friday after Christmas as the worst driving windows of 2025, while Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day were expected to be light.

At the airport, Orlando International forecast about 3.1 million passengers from December 19, 2025 to January 5, 2026. The peak days came after New Year’s: January 3 and 4, with about 196,000 passengers each. MCO recommends arriving at least 3 hours before your flight.
