Quick answer

January is Orlando's coolest month, with an average high of 72 °F (22 °C), an average low of 50 °F (10 °C) and little rain. The first days of the year are still busy with holiday crowds. Once schools reopen, park crowds tend to ease, except over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

January is when a lot of people up North start counting the days to somewhere warm. Orlando delivers on that, with a catch: it is warm in the afternoon, not all day. And the parks feel very different in the first week of the year than they do two weeks later.

What is the weather like in Orlando in January?

Mild afternoons, cool mornings and chilly nights. January is Orlando’s coolest month. Based on NOAA climate normals (the 1991 to 2020 average, measured at Orlando International Airport), the average high is 72 °F (22 °C) and the average low is 50 °F (10 °C). The monthly mean, day and night combined, is 61 °F (16 °C), the lowest of the year.

Averages hide the swings. Cold fronts push through Florida in January, and the weather can change from one day to the next. The same NOAA data shows that a typical January has:

  • about 5 nights below 40 °F (4 °C);
  • about 1 night at or below freezing, 32 °F (0 °C);
  • about 7 days above 80 °F (27 °C).

So you can get a shorts and sunglasses afternoon and, two days later, a morning where you want a real jacket. The coldest January reading on record, according to the National Weather Service office in Melbourne (which covers Orlando), is 19 °F (-7 °C), set on January 21, 1985. That is rare, but it is why a warm layer belongs in the suitcase.

Rain is light. January averages about 2.5 inches (63 mm), and a typical January has only about 4 days with at least a tenth of an inch. July gets three times as much.

It also gets dark early. U.S. Naval Observatory data puts sunset in Orlando at about 5:40 p.m. on January 1 and close to 6 p.m. by the end of the month. The temperature drops quickly after that. If you are coming from New York, Chicago, Toronto or Manchester, 50 °F at night will feel easy. If you are coming from South Texas or Arizona, it may feel colder than you expected. Every month of the year is broken down in Orlando weather by month.

Is it warm enough to swim in Orlando in January?

In the air, on some afternoons, yes. In an unheated pool, usually no. With average lows of 50 °F (10 °C) and a few nights near freezing, the water in an unheated pool stays too cold for most adults and almost all kids.

This is the biggest planning difference between a January trip and a summer one. If the pool is a big part of why you want a vacation home instead of a hotel, book a home with pool heat and confirm it is included in your stay. We explain how pool heating works, and what to ask before you book, in how pool heat works in Orlando vacation homes. You can also go straight to vacation homes with a private pool.

Winter is winter here too, just a soft version. Per the U.S. Naval Observatory, the winter solstice falls on December 21, 2026 and the spring equinox on March 20, 2027, so all of January sits inside the season.

Are Orlando theme parks busy in January?

It depends on the week. The first days of the year still bring holiday crowds. From the second week on, things tend to slow down, with one exception: Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

The first week: the tail end of the holidays

New Year’s in Orlando arrives with schools still on break. In Orange County, where Orlando is, the public school winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027. January 4 is still a day off for students, and classes resume January 5.

The holiday decorations stay up for the first few days too. Disney’s holiday season runs through January 6, Universal’s through January 3, and SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration runs on select dates through January 4. Disney Jollywood Nights, the separately ticketed evening event at Hollywood Studios, still has nights on January 3 and 5, 2027.

Outside the parks, the Citrus Bowl, a college football bowl game, is on Saturday, January 2, 2027, at noon at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend: January 6 to 10, 2027

runDisney has confirmed the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend for January 6 to 10, 2027. The lineup includes a 5K, a 10K, the half marathon and the full marathon, plus the multi race challenges. 2027 is the 30th anniversary of the half marathon.

Even if you are not running, those dates matter. The races take place inside Walt Disney World and bring runners and their families to the area for the whole weekend.

Mid and late January

With schools back in session and no federal holiday until the 18th, demand from American families drops. The exception is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday that falls on Monday, January 18, 2027. Saturday the 16th, Sunday the 17th and Monday the 18th make a three day weekend for a lot of families, and plenty of them use it for a short park trip.

After MLK weekend, the rest of January tends to be calmer. To see how the season shows up in price, check the month by month table on this page with the median nightly rate of our homes. If you are thinking about a longer winter stay, the way many snowbirds do, that table is the quickest way to compare months. Seasons across the whole year are covered in Orlando peak and off season, and the quietest weeks are in the least crowded times at the Orlando parks.

In practice: if your dates are flexible, arrive after January 5 and save the park your family cares about most for a weekday between January 11 and 15 or between January 19 and 29. Avoid putting your most important park day on Saturday the 16th or Monday the 18th.

Should you drive or fly to Orlando in January?

Both work well, and the choice usually comes down to how far away you live and how many people are coming.

Driving. Families from Georgia and the Carolinas often drive down on I-95 or I-75, and for a big group the drive can change the budget math. If you live farther north and want your own car in Florida without two long days on the road, Amtrak’s Auto Train runs daily between Lorton, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.) and Sanford, Florida (north of Orlando). The trip takes about 17 and a half hours. You ride in the passenger cars while your car, van, SUV or motorcycle travels in an enclosed carrier on the same train.

Flying. Orlando International Airport (MCO) lists nonstop service from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Halifax, Calgary and Winnipeg, among other Canadian cities, and from London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin. Routes and seasons change, so confirm with the airline before you book.

If you fly in, you will very likely want a car for a vacation home stay. Here is why, and when you can skip it: do you need a car in Orlando. If this is your first trip, read where to stay in Orlando too.

What to pack for Orlando in January

Pack layers. A day can start near 50 °F (10 °C), pass 68 °F (20 °C) in the afternoon and turn cool again right after sunset. A suitcase that works:

  • A light jacket or hoodie for mornings and evenings, every day.
  • One warmer layer, like a packable puffer, for the cold front nights that show up a few times a month.
  • Long pants and shorts. Plenty of people leave in jeans and come back with the hoodie tied around their waist.
  • Closed, comfortable sneakers. You walk a lot on a park day, and sandals mean cold feet at night.
  • A light rain jacket or poncho. It rarely rains, but a cold front can bring a shower with it.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses. A cool day is misleading, and the Florida sun burns in winter too.
  • Swimsuits, if your home has a heated pool.

For kids, keep an extra layer in the backpack for the end of the day. Fireworks and nighttime shows start after dark, when the temperature has already dropped.

What to do in Orlando in January besides the parks

January has its own calendar, inside and outside the parks, and the cooler weather makes outdoor plans easier.

EPCOT International Festival of the Arts. Disney lists the festival from January 15 to March 1, 2027, with artwork around the park, live performances and food booths designed as art. If you arrive early in the month, it will not have started yet.

SeaWorld in January. SeaWorld Orlando’s 2027 calendar includes a Three Kings Celebration, honoring Three Kings Day, and a new event called Ocean Discovery Days, both in January. Exact dates for each have not been published yet.

Manatees at Blue Spring. Blue Spring State Park, in Orange City north of Orlando, is a winter refuge for manatees. According to the state agency that manages the St. Johns River basin, the season runs roughly from mid November to March, and on cold days hundreds of manatees can be seen from the boardwalk. The spring is closed to swimming and diving during that time, so this one is for watching.

Citrus Bowl. If you follow college football, the January 2 game is a chance to see a major bowl live.

Water parks: check first. Disney’s ticket terms note that water parks may close for maintenance, seasonally or because of weather. In January, check the operating calendar before you pay for a ticket that includes a water park.

If you are still choosing an area, browse vacation homes near Disney and vacation homes near Universal.
