August is the tail end of summer vacation in the US. The heat and the afternoon storms are the same as in July, but the crowds change around mid month, when schools in Florida and across the Southeast start the new year.

What is the weather like in Orlando in August?

Hot, humid and stormy. Based on NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Orlando International Airport, the average August high is 92 °F (33 °C) and the average low is 74 °F (23 °C). Nights barely cool off: on average, fewer than one night a month drops below 70 °F (21 °C).

The heat is steady. A typical August has about 24 days at 90 °F (32 °C) or above. The all-time August record is 101 °F (38 °C), according to the National Weather Service office in Melbourne, which covers Orlando. Its records also show that August 2026 was the seventh warmest August since 1892, with an average temperature of 84.6 °F.

August is Orlando’s second wettest month, behind only June. Days get shorter, too. Per the U.S. Naval Observatory, the sun sets around 8:16 p.m. on August 1, 2027, and around 7:48 p.m. on August 31. For the full year, see Orlando weather by month.

When are the rainiest weeks in August?

The first two. In NOAA’s daily normals, the chance of at least a tenth of an inch of rain on any given day is 38% from August 1 to 4, tied with late June for the highest of the year. It slowly drops through the rest of the month.

The gap between early and late August is small. Timing matters more. The National Weather Service in Melbourne explains that in summer the Atlantic and Gulf sea breezes push inland and meet over the peninsula, and that collision often sets off storms with frequent lightning and heavy rain. The clouds build in the afternoon. It is not clockwork, but it is the pattern of the wet season, which in Orlando starts around May 24 and ends around October 15 in a typical year.

When thunder starts, get out of the pool. The National Weather Service advises staying in a safe shelter until 30 minutes after the last thunder you hear. If the weather wrecks a park day, see things to do in Orlando on a rainy day.

Is it safe to visit Orlando in August with hurricane season?

Yes, with a plan. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The National Hurricane Center puts the peak on September 10, with most activity between mid August and mid October.

Based on the 1991 to 2020 average, the first hurricane of the season forms on August 11 and the first major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) on September 1. An average season has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes across the whole Atlantic basin, including the Caribbean and the Gulf, over six months.

That calls for attention, not panic. The National Hurricane Center publishes a Tropical Weather Outlook covering the next 2 and 7 days. Check it in the week before you travel and know the cancellation terms of your booking. For the real risk to Orlando month by month, read Orlando hurricane season. For what happens to your reservation, see vacation rental cancellations and hurricanes.

Is Disney World crowded in late August?

Late August is usually much calmer than early August. Many of the districts that send drive-in families to Orlando are back in class by mid month.

Most 2027 to 2028 school calendars are not out yet. The 2026 dates show the pattern:

WhoFirst day of school
Gwinnett County Public Schools, GeorgiaAugust 5, 2026
Orange County Public Schools, OrlandoAugust 11, 2026
New York City Public SchoolsSeptember 10, 2026
Labor DayMonday, September 6, 2027

Sources: Gwinnett County Public Schools, Orange County Public Schools, New York City Public Schools and OPM.

If you drive down from Georgia or the Carolinas, check your district calendar first: Gwinnett County was already back in class on August 5, 2026. By mid August, the Florida and Georgia districts in the table were in session, which is why the second half of the month loses so many drive-in families. In the Northeast, as in New York City, classes did not start until after Labor Day. Labor Day weekend runs from Saturday, September 4, to Monday, September 6, 2027.

If you live in Florida, Disney sells year round Florida resident tickets. As of October 2026, its site lists 40% off 4-Day Tickets and 30% off 3-Day Tickets compared with the non-resident price, with proof of a Florida address. For the calmest stretches of the year, see the least crowded times at the Orlando parks.

In practice: if your dates are flexible, book the second half of August. Get to the park at opening, enjoy the morning, when it is coolest and driest, and head back to the house by early afternoon. The pool covers the hottest hours, and if a storm rolls in, everyone is already inside. Go back to the park at night if fireworks are on your list.
