How to make the most of Animal Kingdom from a vacation home?

Quick answer

Arrive before opening and ride Avatar Flight of Passage or Kilimanjaro Safaris first. Animal Kingdom usually opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m., three hours before EPCOT and Hollywood Studios on the dates we checked. Standard parking is $35 a day, which leaves the evening for dinner at the house.

Animal Kingdom rewards early risers more than any other Disney World park. It opens early, closes early and packs its biggest draws into a handful of rides. If you are staying at a vacation home and driving in each morning, that changes how you plan the day. Every hour, price and rule below comes from official Disney sources checked in October 2026.

What time does Animal Kingdom open and close?

On most days Animal Kingdom opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m., earlier than the other Disney World parks. Hours change by date, so check the official calendar before you leave the house. Here are two sample days from Disney’s calendar, pulled on October 6, 2026:

ParkWednesday, October 14, 2026Wednesday, December 2, 2026
Animal Kingdom8 a.m. to 6 p.m.8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Magic Kingdom8 a.m. to 11 p.m.9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Hollywood Studios9 a.m. to 9 p.m.9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

On some October 2026 dates the park stays open until 7 p.m., and Disney can change hours at any time. The pattern holds, though: Animal Kingdom is the first park to close. For a vacation home stay, that works in your favor. You can leave in the late afternoon and still get pool time and a home cooked dinner.

Guests at Disney Resort hotels and select other hotels get in 30 minutes early through Early Theme Park Entry. At Animal Kingdom, that means 7:30 a.m. Vacation home guests do not get that perk, so arriving early matters even more. Our guide on what time to arrive at the Orlando parks covers when to leave the house.

How much is parking at Animal Kingdom?

Standard parking at Animal Kingdom is $35 per day, the same as the other three Disney parks. Preferred parking, closer to the entrance, runs $50, $55 or $60 depending on the season. Disney says the free parking lot trams are back at all four theme parks.

For your GPS, use the park’s official address: 2901 Osceola Parkway. Guests with a valid disability parking permit use a dedicated lot a short distance from the entrance. For a side by side with Universal, see how much parking costs at Disney World and Universal.

What is there to do at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom?

The park is split into themed lands, and the headliners sit in Pandora, Africa and Asia. The Tree of Life on Discovery Island stands in the middle and is the easiest landmark for getting your bearings.

Pandora: The World of Avatar. Home to Avatar Flight of Passage, a 3D flight simulator where you ride a mountain banshee, and Na’vi River Journey, a gentle boat ride through a glowing rainforest with no height requirement.

Africa. This is where you board Kilimanjaro Safaris, an 18 minute ride in an open-air vehicle through a 110 acre reserve. Disney lists hippos, lions, giraffes, white rhinos, cheetahs, crocodiles, elephants, painted dogs and zebras. Africa is also home to Festival of the Lion King, a show with songs, pageantry and puppetry from the film, and the Wildlife Express Train station.

Asia. Expedition Everest is the park’s roller coaster. Your train climbs into the Himalayas, hits a broken track and plunges backward into the dark, with the Yeti waiting. Kali River Rapids is the river raft ride, and Disney warns you will get wet, possibly soaked.

Discovery Island. The theater inside the Tree of Life plays Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, a 4D show with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.

Rafiki’s Planet Watch. You get there by train from Africa. Since May 26, 2026 it has hosted Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station, with games straight from Bluey episodes, plus Jumping Junction, where you can see kangaroos and wallabies.

What changed at Animal Kingdom in 2026?

The biggest change is the end of DinoLand U.S.A., which Disney closed for good on February 2, 2026. DINOSAUR, Restaurantosaurus and The Boneyard play area went with it. Tropical Americas is being built in its place, with an announced 2027 opening and no exact date yet. Disney has promised two signature attractions, one based on Indiana Jones and one on Encanto, plus a carousel, a kids’ play area and one of the largest quick-service restaurants at Walt Disney World.

Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, a 25 minute show, remains on the official lineup at Theater in the Wild. While construction continues, check the My Disney Experience app for what is open on the day you go.

What are the height requirements at Animal Kingdom?

Only three major Animal Kingdom attractions have a height requirement, and the lowest is Kali River Rapids. Measure the kids at home before you promise any ride.

Is the safari better in the morning?

It is a solid strategy, but Disney does not promise a time of day with more animals in view. The official page only says every trip is different because the animals have minds of their own. The case for mornings is practical. The vehicle is open-air, the Orlando heat builds through the day, and lines are only getting started right after opening. If your family cares most about the animals, do the safari first and save Pandora for later. If Flight of Passage is the priority, head straight to Pandora and ride the safari next.

What does a one-day Animal Kingdom plan look like?

One day is enough for Animal Kingdom as long as you start early. This plan works for a family driving in and heading back to the house in the late afternoon:

  1. Before opening: leave enough time to park, ride the tram and clear security.
  2. First hour: Avatar Flight of Passage, or Kilimanjaro Safaris if your family prefers the animals. Na’vi River Journey next if the line is short.
  3. Mid-morning: the other headliner and Expedition Everest.
  4. Lunch and peak heat: seated shows such as Festival of the Lion King and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!. Showtimes are in the app.
  5. Early afternoon: Kali River Rapids, when getting wet feels good. With little kids, take the train to Bluey’s Wild World.
  6. Late afternoon: repeat your favorites and leave near closing.

Without the Disney hotel Early Entry, Lightning Lane can pay off if Flight of Passage is a must. To fit Animal Kingdom into your week, read how many park days you need in Orlando.

In practice: since Animal Kingdom closes early, it is the best day of the trip for dinner at the house. Do the grocery run the night before, leave the park in the late afternoon and spend the evening at the pool before a long Magic Kingdom or Universal day.

Is a vacation home a good base for Animal Kingdom?

It is if you are driving and like to head back early. The park opens at 8 a.m. on most days, and mornings go smoother when breakfast is ready in your own kitchen and snacks are already packed. After 6 p.m. the house gives you what the park cannot: room to spread out, a full kitchen and, in many homes, a private pool.
